How to Child-Proof Your Home Mandir Deities: The Power of a Stable Marble Base

wood carved base for krishna deity painted in folk art style for diy base

You have concerns about keeping your home altar and deities child safe? I completely get it! I did too. In fact, back in 2017 when my children were young, it was on my mind a lot.

For my daughter, I got these small metal forms of Krishna Balaram. They did occasionally fall over during dressing.

Metal forms of Krishna and Balaram deities

My mother worships small forms of Gaur Nitai, and allowing the grandchildren to assist is a bit stressful, because sometimes the kids may accidentally knock them over. So she doesn’t really allow Nitaigaur to be handled except by her. It’s ok though, because now she has the largest Krishna deity in person. His form is made from marble, and the stability is no longer an issue.

Naturally, most of us can’t have 4 foot deities in our home mandir (and really, He is VERY difficult to move, it’s more of a temple size). I realized I needed to update my previous advice on welcoming a deity to your home.

Now I have many years more experience in preparing marble deity forms. Because of my tests with different bases you can insert the deity into for stability, I have new opinions! Because of this, I feel confident sharing fresh ideas to child-proof your altar and ease your worries.

Why a Separate Marble Base Ensures Total Stability

To stabilise a marble deity form, ordering a separate marble base is wonderful! In carving, keep the base separate from the deity form. The weight of the base would be too great for the fine carving of the Lord’s form.

Here’s an example of a carved separate lotus base, and the Lord form that inserts directly into the lotus base.

BalaGopal: Darling Child

$4000

Fall in love with BalaGopal, a delicate hand-carved marble deity of Krishna with loving eyes and a soft, gentle colouring. This sweetest form comes with a curling black wig and glimmering pearl jewelry. Seven exquisite outfits adorn this sweet and fresh boyish form of dear sweet Krishna.

Standing 15 inches tall on His carved marble lotus base. He’s sized for easy daily care — light enough to lift in and out, and a good size for dressing. Perfect for stability and laying Him to sleep at nights — use our measuring guide if you’d like to see exactly how He’ll sit at home.

This is a one-of-a-kind vigraha — once He is claimed, there will never be another exactly like Him. If His beauty has already found a home in your heart, don’t let this chance slip away.

How stable are deities with a separate base they insert into? Once you stand Him in the base, He is so stable! Accidental bumps during daily dressing or by curious toddler hands won’t easily knock Him over.

You can easily order a lotus base after you already have the deity forms. A few photos and measurements will make them match up nicely. Simply trace around the base of the lord, and measure from all sides. Photos work best, and if you want me to assist you in arranging that, please feel free reach out.

The base recess may be slightly loose, so you could fill it in a little. Use Blue-tac, natural beeswax (my go to for all things deity adhering), or you can also use a little air – hardening epoxy clay like MouldIt. amazon.com.au/Modeling-Compound-Sculpting-Building-Repairing/ here’s a link for one I have used in past. It’s easy to mix the 2 part ratio and mold into place. Place the statue/deity in to test and adjust the modeling compound before it sets over time.

Creative DIY Deity Bases: Wood, Concrete, & Resin

Now if ordering a base is beyond your current means, you may want to delve into creating your own DIY base! You can do this in many creative ways.

For example, my artist friend Radha das created a carved wooden base for his beautiful Krishna.

DIY WOOD Deity Base

In New Zealand, Jahnavi dasi and her husband Rama das, carved a tree stump into a fitted base for their deity.

DIY Concrete Base

Another lovely family serving a charming Radha & Radhakanta.

They shared photos of the concrete bases they made for the stability of their sweet deity forms.

“Since the Krishna’s base is not perfectly even we decided to make a stand out of concrete. By using concrete we were able to press the base into the poured mixture and get a perfect opening for the Krishna’s base. Then we get it primed and painted a week later. We hope Radha and Radhakanta love it.

I personally, never worked with concrete and my family members too. That was my husband’s idea and I must say it worked out just perfectly. After the job was done our son had some fun painting it. I just a little bit helped him. So it looks like whole family had a service.” Ekaterina

Resin Base

Meanwhile dear devotees family in the UK serves the most gorgeous 18inch Krishna deity. She is making a resin base like a lotus pond for her beautiful boy.

Resin stand Georgina used is specifically for deep pour like the river tables you see online. These are her tips on creation to help you get started:

It take 48 H to set, depending on the room temperature it can set a bit faster. The resin has a 6 h window to work on, enough time to place all the components you like.

This family is so crafty they also are making the Lord some brass flutes! (and have promised me one, thank you my friends!) You can explore and view the awesome resin base diy project on her instagram account, follow this link Aren’t Krishna crafts just the greatest?!

Last-Minute Abhishek Base Solution for Janmashtami

For our abhishek I had a LOT of last minute madness making a base for my dear friend Radharani dasi’s Krishna deity. He’s 15inches tall, a dressed deity form of Lord. For 3 years now, we have invited Him to come and accept a bathing ceremony for our Janmashtami celebrations.

Because in past bathing Him has been somewhat stressful, one would hold the ankles while others bathed Him. So it was great this year to create a separate base He could insert into for the purpose of bathing. Because it was a last minute project (honestly, we all know Krishna’s appearance day comes every year, how many rushed activities do we all do?! So crazy).

This is a special base I made for the deity to stand into during abhishek

Anyhow, I am putting together a blog post about how I created it, and I’ll make a new one with a tutorial for you, seeing as my documentation was… shall we say, haphazard.

In summary, a fitted marble base (or DIY insert base) is one of the most effective ways to child-proof your home mandir deities and protect them during daily shringar or bathing. And of course, as an added layer of safety, keeping the main altar platform just out of reach of toddlers gives you complete peace of mind!

Have you made a base? Please share some photos and I’ll update this post with your pictures, or write a new blog just to share.

DIY Papier-Mâché Govardhan Hill Ideas for Govardhan Puja

special offering to goverdhan hill made with real ferns and papier mache

Do you love getting creative for festival celebrations? Once upon a time, my friends Amy and Krista and many others, made a wonderful DIY papier-mâché Govardhan Hill .

Crafting the Base with Chicken Wire and Papier-Mâché

To build a sturdy structure, they started by shaping a foundation using flexible chicken wire. Once the hill shape took form, they covered the entire frame in layers of papier-mâché.

After the layers dried completely, the fun really began! They painted the surface in rich, earthy tones and glued decorative elements around the slopes. Finally, they inserted real, living greenery into the hill to bring sacred Govardhan to life.

Enjoy the photos I captured on the day.

Bringing Govardhan Puja to Life for Children (and everyone)

After many years, this specific hill didn’t survive, but it sure was a wonderful installation and celebration.

Sacred Giriraj Govardhan does not strictly require a form of Krishna on top to be worshipped. However, we all love seeing Him!

The festival of Govardhan Puja is always a time of immense rejoicing for devotees. Children especially have wild fun dancing and skipping around the hill. Creating hands-on crafts like this is one of the best ways to involve little ones in the pastime and build joyful memories.

Simple Ways Kids Can Help Build a Papier-Mâché Hill

Have you ever made a DIY papier-mâché Govardhan Hill? Another year, a friend and I built one together. I am so sad to say that although I wrote an entire article detailing the build, I cannot seem to locate my process photos! I hope to find them soon so I can share that tutorial with you.

In the meantime, I hope these photos inspire your own festival preparations this year!

Explore previous Goverdhan Puja activities for kids here in the GROWING GOVERDHAN KIDS ACTIVITY

There’s also an utterly wonderful Goverdhan Hill diorama which my dear friend Jagannath dasi creates. It’s been her passionately pursued hobby for many years, and she has collected the little figures for such a long time. I’ve had the happy opportunity to many times view in person. There is always something fresh to discover!

10 Christmas Carols You’ll Love to Sing

Krishna blesses our Christmas Celebrations

Joyous Noel!

There’s so many beautiful Christmas Carols you can learn and sing with family that I wanted to share some of our favorites with you.

What we do in our family is usually a nice big Christmas lunch with all our family and then we go and join our friends for a Christmas evening kirtan celebration. I love this, so special! We always have Jesus on the altar with Krishna.

1. Bless The Lord

Let us offer our respectful obeisances to Lord Jesus Christos who dedicates his life to the Supreme Person.

Jesus made it very clear that the Supreme Lord is his heart, and that he is the heart of the Supreme Lord.

Krishna says:

The saints are my heart and I am their heart. They are always thinking of me and embracing me, and I am always thinking of them and embracing them.

Jesus Christ stands as our inspiration. He is the embodiment of love for God and all living beings, and such love should be celebration with the congregational glorification of God and His Holy Names on the appearance day of Lord Jesus Christ, and on every other day of the year!

With the most beautiful lyrics, and combined with that soul-stirring Hare Krishna Maha Mantra! Gotta watch this beautiful sound clip of the Choir of Angels with the beautiful frangipani flower wristlets and candles (battery operated thank you) Honestly this one might be my absolute favorite!

2. Prayer of St. Francis

The first and foremost commandment of Jesus is to love the Supreme Father with all our heart.

When we look at Jesus Christ we see in him what we aspire for, and what we hope and pray to acheive.

There is a saying that when you ask God for something, you will receive it.

Jesus Christ is showing us what we should ask for, what we should pray for and that is unconditional love for God and for all living beings.

Such pure spiritual love will make it so that we are happy, free and peaceful, and that the world is happy free and peaceful.

3.When Love Was Born

Christmas is a celebration of Gods love for us. From time to time, the Supreme Person, Sri Krishna, sends an empowered representative to this world to invite us back to Him.

Such was the case when the pure love, son, and servant of God, Lord Jesus Christ appeared in this world, bringing with him the greatest gift, the gift of pure spiritiual love.

He embodied a love that embraced all living beings. This song celebrates the night that such selfless spiritual love in the person of Jesus Christ was born.

4.Blessed Be Your Name

Introducing this beautiful powerful hymn, and I wanted to include it here, because it really encapsulates the very meaning of this beautiful prayer.

Pure love for God is already residing dormant in our hearts, but it is covered over by so much material contamination. By coming into contact with God I become purified of all that is keeping me from experiencing pure spiritual love. In this age the Supreme Lord, out of His Causeless mercy descends as His Holy Name, transcendental sound, and it is a very simple way to come into contact with Him through that sound.

Jaya Jesus means All Glories to Jesus.

5. Day By Day

Jesus first commandment is to love God. His second commandment is like unto it: Love our neighbour as our selves. Love for others, for our neighbours, for our enemies, cannot be separated from love for God because love for God is the unifiying factor. We pray that our love for God will grow day by day.

This beautiful Christmas carol starts beautifully solemn, and then has such a fun, swinging, getting into it upbeat sound! We love it 🙂

6. The Message

Resonating with Vaishnava’s, this beautiful song praising Lord Jesus Christ, a pure devotee of the Supreme Lord. You might never have heard this one before! It’s one I grew up with! I could sing it if I lost every other memory, I know it so well! SUPER BEAUTIFUL!

7.What Child Is This?

A beautiful soaring soprano version of this beautiful song about baby Jesus, kids love this one… I love how they have incorporated the Om Hari Om – I didn’t grow up “Christian” so I have no idea if these tunes are fresh or new or old, and pretty much every traditional carol is a revelation to me 🙂 LOVING it!

8.Happy Birthday Jesus

We only just started singing this one and I LOVE it!

I’m sure you have heard a version or two of this beautiful Happy Birthday Jesus Christmas song – it was the star of 2018 for us! Here’s my daughter with her friends signing it at a nursing home. Can you see how they are doing their earnest best? After 3 months of carol practices, they’ll never forget the lyrics or tunes of these songs!

9.Jesus Loves the Little Ones

Definitely get to throw yourself into this Christmas song! It’s so fun, we usually love to point and poke and giggle with the hand gestures!

10.O Holy Night

A classic for a reason!

This beautiful soul stirring song of praise never gets old! You know it I’m sure, but I really had to include it in this list of loveliness!

Krishna Janmastami Advent Calender

Remember Krishna and celebrate His wonderful Appearance with your family!

My daughter has been stuck at home sick all week, but we have had such a nice time because of this craft!

In between woe and tissues, she’s loved lavishing attention and detail on the special names of Krishna and accompanying meaning of Krsna’s name on each Advent card.

These beautiful cards are created for this year – 2019 – and have 24 names of Krishna with their special meanings!

There is a version for AUSTRALIA and INDIA and one for USA and Other timezones!

Download the pdf and all instructions are set up for you.

DOWNLOAD the 24 Day Krishna Janmastami Advent calendar

You will need – 1 large sheet of craft card A2 size (light coloured or white)OR a large cork board instead glue stick watercolour paints or pencils or lead pencils and fine brushes larger brush for back ground watercolour washes jute string hole punch blue tack for extra hanging support (as the card starts to warp in)print out of all the name cards and title of calendar on a 170 gsm weight white printing card (or heavier weight)

Use watercolour paints or pencils to colour all the numbers and words. You can paint your large A2 size backing card as well with a water colour wash. You can colour each card with a water colour wash also leave to dry then paint the words and numbers, or just leave the background white.

Cut and fold all the name /number cards -these hang on the ‘line’ 4 cards per line.

If you are using a large card background measure 10 cm down from the top of your backing card then start mark holes for tying the string through. You can make each hole 9 cm apart if using the same paper size we used. Use a single hole puncher to punch out all the holes then cut 6 lengths of jute to make the lines. Punch 2 holes out of the top for a hanging string.

Calender will look like this, as every day you uncover a new name of Krishna!

Calendar example after 24 days! All names are now on display!

It’s a good idea to show the kids the concept, so they can visualise what their calender will look like and how to decorate the paper with Krishna’s beautiful names on it.

A Wonderful World of Worship

Krishna deity stands with beautiful three fold bending form holding flute dressed in fuschia pink and turquoise outfit with skirt, vest and shawl

Dear Friends!

When your mind begins to become attracted to Krishna, a wonderful world opens up! The world of Love. Placing our love at the lotus feet of the Lord, where it is most lovingly received AND reciprocated, is so very perfect.

I have a 10yr old daughter, Ishvara dasi, and we are heading in to the Aussie school holidays. This time the Easter break is a 3 week break! Lots of time to fill up.

We are planning to do a special girls camp. My sister and I are hosting it, and we are co-ordinating the 2 day camping sleepover. It’s going to be last minute, because that’s just how life happens, so you’ll probably hear about it AFTER and not before.

So we are putting together a really full program for our group of girls, and we decided that the THEME of our camp is “Making Krishna your Valentine”. I can’t deny, this is probably because of Krishna’s special Valentines day outfit, and all our girls are at that nubile young age where they have not been paired off with a partner, and starting to have girlish longings for a beloved, arise in their hearts.
Don’t we all?! I do!

Krishna Krishna you are mine, and I am yours!

Please let me always remember you, and never forget you!

Ok on to what I wanted to share!

We are going to do a series of creative crafting with the girls, and one thing we will do is a class about arotik – the paraphernalia that we use on the arotik and how it’s offered as well as the meaning and intentions.

Lucky for us – and for you – we have this excellent resource available to us – a series on HOME DEITY WORSHIP as well as specifically on Arotik.

So we plan to play this excellent video & follow it up with a ghee-wick making hands on activity, and then later we will also do a super fun activity where we will use handkerchief (the cloth offered) and experiment with 3 ways to dye it! We plan to do shibori, tie-dye, and batik!

I’m so excited about this section I can’t tell you!

Found some incredible resources on SHIBORI dye techniques online. https://www.apieceofrainbow.com/indigo-tie-dye/

Our schedule is tightly packed with activities/ games/ story telling and kirtan.

We are going to tell the story of Krishna rescuing Rukmini (another incredible one you can listen to Devaki Nandana dasi telling on YouTube at your convenience! So amazing!

You will love to listen and watch this storytelling by the famous Krishna storyteller Devaki Nandana dasi! Follow her channel too.

I am so excited to share these stories with you, and for the actual camp, it’s going to be so much fun and I’m so excited about doing it!

I’ll share lots of photos! We are also going to have some quiet time activities, and all our cool Krsna doll printables and other activities are going to be super in play! https://rememberkrishna.com/shop/color-in-radha-krsna-gopi-friends-paperdolls/
